About Virginia
A nugget in the Goldfields of the Orange Freestate
Virginia is a Gold mining town on the Sand River, 145 km north-west of Bloemfontein. It was laid out in 1954 and is administered by a village management board. The name was carved on a boulder on the farm Merriespruit by two American surveyors in 1890, and was subsequently taken over by the railway siding in 1892 and by the town. Here is situated the largest sulphuric acid plant in the Southern Hemisphere, producing 350 tons per day. A beautiful town with a strong gold mining heritage where visitors can also enjoy boating, fishing and water-skiing on the Sand River, or hiking and bird watching along the river banks. Virginia also boasts the place where the ring was made that was featured in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Despite its rapid progress following the gold discoveries of the 1940s, the town has remained a beautiful, tranquil town enhanced by lovely gardens.
